He then moved on to British television doing variety of roles. His major breakthrough role was in the movie Shopping that released in 1994. His fame rose like anything after he played Lord Douglas in the 1997 film Wilde. It got him the Most Promising Newcomer Award and after that the handsome actor ensured that he always exceeded the expectations of his fans. He played many memorable roles in movies like Gattaca, Road to Perdition and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, the last one a Clint Eastwood movie.
He was part of many landmark movies throughout his career. His movies witnessed commercial success and also got him lots of critical acclaim. Two of the roles that he essayed in Anthony Minghella movies The Talented Mr Ripley (1999) and Cold Mountain (2003) got him Academy Award nominations. He was impressive in all his movies including Alfie, The holiday, Sleuth, etc. He is also playing one of the roles which Heath Ledger was portraying in the movie The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Playing true to him looks he is also playing supermodel in the movie Rage but the movie that everyone is eagerly awaiting for is Sherlock Holmes.
