Rolex Mentor Protégé Initiative; Martin Scorsese Mentors Celina Murga

The Mentor Protégé Initiative by Rolex is a unique program wherein extraordinary rising artists from a variety of genres are mentored by great masters for a period of one year. The creative collaboration is achieved by seeking out these rising artists from around the world and pairing them up with masters of their respective fields for a one-on-one mentoring relationship. The year is concluded with a presentation of the mentor and protégé in the month of December. Martin Scorsese presented his protégé Celina Murga on the 3rd of December at the BFI Southbank in London.
Celina Murga is an Argentinean film-maker who had two films to her credit before she was introduced to her mentor. Martin Scorsese is a well renowned name when it comes to making movies. He completed his first feature film in 1968 though won critical and popular acclaim for the first time in 1973 for his film Mean Streets. Martin Scorsese has a long list of critically acclaimed movies to his name like Taxi Driver, New York New York, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Casino, Gangs of New York, The Aviator and more recently The Departed. The acclaimed director has an equally long list of awards that have honored the creative genius like the Golden Lion from the Venice Film Festival, the AFI Lifetime Achievement Award, Directors Guild of America Lifetime Achievement Award and a Kennedy Center Honor.
The opportunity to mentor was a delight for the film maker as in his initial years while he was still a student in New York he got the chance to spend five days in California to observe the making of a television show. Since he did not get the option to observe with his choice of directors, Martin Scorsese had one thing very clear from that
moment that if he ever had the opportunity, he would offer an option to the new talent. Claiming that he would have made a terrible protégé, Martin Scorsese was all praise for his protégé stating that Celina Murga had an inner strength and sure quality about her that gave her the right kind of confidence and helped her stay focused.
Celina Murga too was ecstatic about the time spent with her mentor and stated that he was extremely generous about sharing his knowledge. The young film-maker admired her mentor for the fact that he puts in a lot of trust in his film-making team and discusses new ways of making the shots with his assistant director and director of photography. She enjoyed every moment of the Rolex Mentor Protégé initiative watching the film-making genius in action. The initiative is an investment on both the mentor and protégé’s part and takes forth the underlying aim of Rolex to promote human excellence and make a lasting contribution to the arts. The initiative is a biennial program and is aimed towards perpetuating a heritage in the field of arts. The opportunity to be a protégé of the masters of one’s field helps condition the rising talent to not only create masterpieces but also learn the nuances of their genre.
